About HCM

Hartford City Mission has been serving youth in Hartford since 1998, starting with Noah's Sidewalk Sonday School. Today we operate programs for children, teens and the neighborhood around our Ministry house in the north end of Hartford.

Hartford City Mission is a bunch of folks who are trying to learn what it means to love Jesus and live like him in the context of Hartford’s northend neighborhood. We do this, in part, through some regular gatherings of smaller communities within the ministry. In the past year, these gatherings have included Camp Noah, Noah’s Art, Noah’s Sidewalk Sonday School, Noah After School,YoungLife (formerly tL youth ministry), Women of the Vine, and the Vine Street Blockwatch.

Some of these groups get together at our ministry house at the corner of Vine and Edgewood Streets - ‘the Vine’, which is also where a group of folks connected to HCM are living together in an intentional community setting (the Community of the Vine). In these pages, you can see what we’ve been up to lately, and a few ways we’ve seen God’s presence in our midst. Maybe you’ll see opportunities to join us in some way.

In the beginning…….
In 1998 three volunteers from First Church of Christ in Wethersfield, First Assembly of God in East Hartford (now Crossroads Community Cathedral), and Valley Community Baptist Church (Avon) began praying and planning toward the launch of Noah’s Sidewalk Sonday School, a ministry designed to share the gospel of Christ with the poor.  NSSS was modeled after the Sidewalk Sunday School concept developed by MetroMinistries of Brooklyn, New York.  Metro, the largest urban outreach ministry in North America, introduced the concept in which a customized box truck ‘takes church to the streets’ of inner city neighborhoods.

NSSS began on October 31, 1998 at the Chappelle Gardens housing complex in Hartford’s north end.  Eventually moving to the parking lot of nearby Simpson-Waverly elementary School, the outdoor program ran 32 weeks/year and averaged between 40 - 60 kids in attendance each week, most between the ages of 5-12.  NSSS employed songs, games, and Bible-based lessons to plant in unchurched north end children the seeds of basic scriptural truths.  Approximately 80% of children who participate in Noah had no church home.

SHARE the Good News. . . of Christ and His Kingdom, glorifying Him in words and actions.  HCM currently partners with other north end ministries to provide assistance for physical needs including food, shelter, education, job assistance, and economic and housing development activities.

DEVELOP Disciples. . . fully devoted followers of Christ who are growing more into His likeness.

PROVIDE Opportunities. . .for Christians from a variety of geographic, economic, or racial backgrounds to serve in relevant, life-changing urban ministries, thus experiencing Christ in a unique manner, and in turn becoming more fully devoted followers of Him.

TRANSFORM Communities. . .we want God’s will as it’s done in heaven to be done down here in Hartford.  So as Christ finds new homes in more and more hearts of Hartford residents we will work to expand the impact of HCM as an agent of justice and peace in our community, striving for: reductions in crime; improvements in education; less poverty; more jobs; fewer boarded up buildings; and more block parties.  The goal of the prophet Nehemiah was to rebuild & revive the whole city of Jerusalem – our vision is no less for Hartford.
